TIN Creation in Nigeria

A Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number that the tax authority assigns to individuals, registered businesses, and incorporated companies for tax purposes. The TIN helps the tax authority identify taxpayers, maintain proper records, and improve tax administration.

Importance of a TIN

A TIN enables individuals and businesses to comply with tax regulations. It also helps tax authorities track tax payments, maintain accurate taxpayer records, and promote efficient tax management.

In line with Section 10, subsection 2 of CIT Acts, as amended in 2019 Finance Acts. Banks in Nigeria has been mandated to obtain Tax Identification Number (TIN) from both Individual and Corporate Organisations, before an account can be open for them. The section equally requires Banks to ensure, all accounts opened prior to this Acts, provide such Tax Identification Number (TIN) information as a precondition for the continued usage of their bank accounts

This is done to synchronize taxpayer banking and tax database with a view to improving tax compliance and ease of tax administration. This will also expand the tax net to capture more individuals and the informal sector

Creation of TIN is divided into two

  1. TIN for Individuals
  2. TIN for Organisations

TIN Creation in Nigeria for Individuals

Individuals can apply for a Tax Identification Number (TIN) through the JRB website using their National Identification Number (NIN) .

Alternatively, applicants can visit the nearest Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) office with the following documents:

  • Utility Bill
  • Valid Government-Issued Identification
  • Passport Photograph

TIN Creation in Nigeria for Non-Individuals

Non-individual entities can also apply for a TIN through the JRB website. These entities include:

  • Limited Liability Companies
  • Incorporated Trustees
  • Enterprises
  • Cooperative Societies
  • Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs)
  • Trade Associations

Applicants must provide the following documents:

  • CAC Certificate
  • Status Report
  • Director’s BVN or NIN Slip
  • Valid Identification of Directors
  • Utility bill
  • Memart

TIN Approval and Certificate Issuance

The relevant tax authority will review and approve each application.

After approval, the system will automatically send the TIN Certificate to the registered email address. Applicants may also collect a hard copy from the nearest NRS office.

Important Notice on Registration Validation

Due to ongoing system integration challenges between the National Revenue Registration System (NRRS) and the Joint Tax Board (JTB) platform, additional validation is required.

Individuals and non-individual entities that register through the JTB website must visit the nearest NRS office to complete domestication, validation, and activation of their TIN records.
